Like thousands of Canadians, I was shocked when CBC let the original Hockey Night in Canada theme go to TSN after a gajillion years (give or take a few). I thought, "How the hell will they ever get another piece of music that could replace the music I've known since I was a kid?" You know what? It doesn't matter. I've listened to the theme on TSN and it just isn't the same. I actually like the new music on CBC and I kind of wonder why they didn't do this years ago. It's old. It's tired.
Here's the deal. HNIC is an institution. It's Saturday night. It's Ron McLean and Don Cherry. It's having a few beers and knowing the next day is a day off. It's the Leafs and then the game I actually want to watch (except Edmonton).
And the real piece of music that gets my blood going is the blair of trumpets when they say, "The following is a live presentation of CBC Sports". Or something like that.
TSN can keep the jingle. CBC has the score.
